5. Strolling Downtown

This isn’t exactly one location in particular, but I love roaming around the downtown area and just happening upon unique locations! It’s so much fun to see how creative I can get, and I feel so good when I find a new great photo spot! There are so many interesting textured and colorful walls downtown—the backdrop opportunities are endless! There is beauty in even the most overlooked locations, you just have to keep your eyes peeled! Never stop exploring the town where you live. You will surprise yourself with all the hidden gems you’ll find!

4. Thompson Strawberry Farm

Who doesn’t love a good sunflower patch? I’ve actually only had one shoot here, and the light was a bit harsh, but we definitely made it work! I typically prefer to shoot during golden hour, but the farm closed before golden hour started so we went a little earlier than I normally would like, so the light was tricky, but sometimes the best photos come from working around obstacles. It forces you to get creative and try new things! I will definitely be back here next season!

3. Poerio Park Nature Center

I can’t say enough good things about this location! I love it, especially in the Spring when all the beautiful purple flowers start to bloom. This is a great location for clients who desire a more intimate location, as the park is very spread out, and I usually don’t have any trouble with random people walking into shots or accidentally featuring photo bombers in the background. I have never been disappointed with a shoot at this location! The bugs, however, can be quite aggressive during the warmer months. I remember fighting off armies of mosquitoes during one shoot, but I toughed it out, and the photos were so worth it! Even though I left with 24 bug bites, I didn’t regret it! I would probably recommend this location for adult clients, but the bugs might be too much for babies and young children—at least in the summer. We don’t want any cranky faces for photos!

4. Kenosha Lighthouse / Simmons Island

I suppose I wouldn’t be a real Kenosha photographer if I didn’t mention the tried and true Kenosha Lighthouse. Yes, it is quite a common spot for photos, but for a good reason! Some of my favorite photos of all time have been taken here, and I will probably never stop coming to Simmons Island for photoshoots. I try not to just get the typical shots that seem to be on everyone’s camera roll, and I’m always hunting for unique lighting or interesting angles. I love the challenge of capturing familiar spaces in new and exciting ways!

1. Wolfenbuttel Park

Summer and Fall are the prime seasons for Wolfenbuttel Park. I just can’t get enough of all those rich, floral colors! What I like most about this park is that you have a lot of different background options all in one area. First, you have the pavilion area with all the gorgeous flowers, and it’s only a short walk to the beach! If you’re going for a minimalist look you also have the big open field with a Lake Michigan backdrop. If you follow the sidewalk all the way around you’ll make your way to the giant rocks that line the shore, which have set up some really interesting shots for me in the past! And finally, if you keep walking just a little further, the harbor is breathtaking in the summer, especially at sunset! I love composing shots with all the boats in the background. Wolfenbuttel Park is always one of my top suggestions for clients who have several outfits, or want a variety of different shots. It’s such a versatile photo location!
