5 Tips to Consider Before Your Photoshoot

If you’ve never had professional photos taken before, you may be wondering what to expect during your photoshoot. As someone who always needs to know the plan ahead of time, I totally get it. If you are not used to being in front of the camera, it can be a bit nerve-racking. That is why I have compiled a list of photoshoot tips—I want to help you prepare so that we can work together to create photos you can’t wait to share!

  1. Remove hair ties from wrists and smart watches before your session.

It’s so easy to forget about these items because they are often part of our daily wardrobe, but they can look very distracting in photos. It’s a good idea to remove them ahead of time because the lingering crease marks they tend to leave on your skin can be equally distracting. I also recommend removing any handmade friendship bracelets if you choose a more formal outfit for your photoshoot. This is obviously optional, but you will think of this tip later when you get your photos back and you can’t stop staring at your neon green friendship bracelet instead of your brand new outfit or the hair you spent hours perfecting.

2. Do not keep your phone in your pocket during your photoshoot!

You will be so disappointed when you get your photos back and everything is perfect except the big bulging rectangle on your thigh or your butt. I always carry a backpack during photoshoots, so if you need somewhere to put your phone, I have a space for it!

3. Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable in.

I recommend trying your clothes on ahead of time to make sure they help you feel confident. There is nothing worse than worrying about your shirt riding up or constantly having to adjust your pants, especially when you are in front of a camera. Remember—you look good when you feel good!

4. Have faith that I will direct you every step of the way.

I know most of my clients are not used to getting their photo taken for an hour straight, so I don’t expect you to know what to do. I’ll tell you how to pose and interact! I actually prefer more natural and candid shots, so I try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. I know it can feel awkward being in front of the camera, but just know that it only feels that way—I won’t make you look awkward!

5. Be kind to yourself!

I know it is hard not to be critical of yourself, but if you go into your photoshoot with the mindset that you will hate your photos, it will be very hard to get out of that headspace. If you anticipate hating your photos, you will always find something to nitpick. I want you have a fun and comfortable experience during your session so that you remember those positive feelings as you look through your gallery for the first time, but we do have to work together to accomplish this! I promise to guide you with the most flattering poses if you promise to trust me. :)
